Nepalese Papermaking: Deckle Box

November 4 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Paperhouse Studio, 180 Shaw St. Unit 102
Toronto, Ontario M6J 2W5 Canada
+ Google Map
$109.25

Deckle boxing is one of the oldest forms of papermaking, and is a style primarily used in Nepal and Tibet. In this style, paper pulp is poured into a high-walled mould and deckle, it’s then placed in a container of water allowing it to be suspended so that more pulp can be dropped and mixed in.

Multiple colours can be combined to make individual decorative sheets allowing for plenty of experimentation like including various different coloured pulp and fibres, and/or the addition of found materials as part of the final sheet. Final sheets are like paintings, each unique from the other.
There will be four sizes of deckle boxes available with the largest being 10 x 20 inches. Deckle boxing is a wonderful technique for making unique book covers or cards, and can be used as a starting point for drawings or pastels.

Sculptural Kinetic Bookmaking

November 6 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Paperhouse Studio, 180 Shaw St. Unit 102
Toronto, Ontario M6J 2W5 Canada
+ Google Map
$70

The sculptural kinetic book is a very flexible format using origami folding and altered book collage to create a book form that springs into a geometric circle shape. This multi-layered book showcases the beautiful papers and collage book pages used to create it!

In this workshop, we’ll start with learning the fundamentals of kinetic books, including history of the exploding map fold, as well as a look at instructor’s private collections as inspiration. After that is the fold-a-thon! We’ll teach you the map fold so you can fold your own kinetic book.

We’ll provide all source materials and books to find your collage elements! You can also choose to bring your own found materials, imagery and/or book you would love to rework into an altered collaged art book. Participants will leave this workshop with a sample book of their own design and detailed instructions to make more at home!

Paperhouse Studio, 180 Shaw St. Unit 102
Toronto, Ontario M6J 2W5 Canada
+ Google Map
$207

This workshop is the 101 of handmade paper! Journey through the process of papermaking from raw materials to hand pulled sheets of paper.

This class is a combination of our beginner level – Deckle Box Paper and Introduction to Western Paper. Students will learn traditional European style sheet forming with fibres such as cotton, abaca (Manila Hemp) and Ontario hemp. We will explore the differences of pulling with a traditional laid mold and a woven mold. Techniques such as laminating, shaped sheets and inclusions will also be introduced, with opportunity for participants to bring in their own found material to experiment with. Basic Nepalese style deckle box is covered as well – a high walled mold and deckle, placed in a container of water allowing the pulp to suspend while pulp is dropped and mixed in. This allows individual pulls of different coloured pulp, mixes of different fibres and/or found materials to be part of the final sheet.

Students will leave this course with 30-40 hand-pulled custom sheets of paper and enough knowledge to continue exploring paper at our intermediate level.
